Don Luigi got the stable’s year off to a great start, after winning convincingly at Moruya on 2 January 2023. Jeff Penza took the steer on ‘The Don’ and they jumped from barrier 7.
‘Johnny’ showed some blistering speed to loop the field after jumped from the wide barrier cleanly. He was able to tuck in and get a spot just outside the leader upon settling down. Shortly after however, there was some more speed added and Johnny drifted back to third position, trailing about 3 lengths from the tearaway leaders now at the front.
After the pack turned into the straight, there were many chances. However, The Don showed a great will to win and knuckled down and stretched out to win the Town Plate by just over a length to Espirito and Akeed.
Johnny is such a great asset to have in the stable and we are all so happy for his wonderful owners who are such great friends of everyone at the stable!
